Bayern Munich 2 Hertha Berlin 2
Round-up:
The Bundesliga season has got underway, and as per tradition it began with the reigning champions, Bayern Munich, who played hosts to Hertha Berlin, and somewhat disappointingly for Bayern, the two sides could not separated as they played out a 2-2 draw despite Bayern having largely dominated the game.. Robert Lewandowski gave the reigning champions the lead with a header in the 24th minute after a good cross from Serge Gnabry. Their lead did not last very long, however, as 12 minutes later Hertha Berlin equalised after a shot from Dodi Lukebakio took a strong deflection off Vedad Ibisevic, and just 3 minutes later Hertha Berlin took the lead after a brilliant through ball from Ibisevic put Marko Grujic through on goal, and Grujic made no mistake in finishing the chance. It was somewhat ironic, therefore, that it would be Grujic who allowed Bayern a route back into the game, as he inexplicably wrestled Lewandowski to the ground in the penalty area, and after the incident was not seen by the referee, a penalty was given by the aid of VAR by referee Harm Osmers and Lewandowski made no mistake in converting it. Bayern then ramped up the pressure significantly and created several openings, but failed to take their chances and thus had to settle for a 2-2 draw, hardly an ideal way to begin the season, particularly as it seems like their rivals this year look well-placed to challenge them for the title. There were no such problems for Bayern's main rivals to the title last season (and they may well be their rivals to it again this season), Borussia Dortmund, who came from behind to beat Augsburg by a remarkable 5-1 scoreline. Florian Niederlechner gave Augsburg the lead inside the opening minute, though their lead lasted a mere 2 minutes, with Paco Alcacer equalising for Dortmund. Then Jadon Sancho gave Dortmund the lead in the 51st minute after some lovely build-up play by Axel Witsel, and six minutes later Marco Reus extended their advantage, before Alcacer grabbed his second of the game just 2 minutes later after an assist by Jadon Sancho. New signing Julian Brandt, on as a substitute having signed from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, wrapped up the scoring to seal an impressive opening day win. It was not such a successful day for the newly promoted sides today, as 1.FC Koln opened their campaign with a narrow 2-1 defeat away to Wolfsburg, with goals from Maximilian Arnold and Wout Weghorst, before Simon Terodde grabbed a consolation for the away side. The other promoted team, SC Paderborn 07 gave Bayer Leverkusen a tough run for their money but ultimately came up short, losing 3-2 despite levelling twice. Leon Bailey gave Leverkusen the lead inside the opening 10 minutes, before just 5 minutes later Sven Michel equalised for the way side. It did not take too long for Leverkusen to go back into the lead, as wonderkid Kai Havertz scored just 4 minutes later. It did not seem to discourage Paderborn however, as 6 minutes later they equalised through Streli Mamba, however, Kevin Volland scored the winning goal in the 69th minute for Bayer Leverkusen. It was a brilliant start for Fortuna Dusseldorf, who won 3-1 away to Werder Bremen, thanks to goals from Rouwen Hennings, Kenan Karaman and Kaan Ayhan, after Johannes Eggestein equalised for the hosts. Another team to get off to a good start to the season were Freiburg, who opened their campaign with a 3-0 win over Mainz 05 thanks to goals from Lucas Holer, Jonathan Schmi and a penalty from Luca Waldschmidt. In this evening's match, Borussia Monchengladbach and Schalke 04 ultimately played out a goalless draw, although Borussia Monchengladbach had more chances and more possession.
