EFL League 2 round-up: MK Dons promoted, Notts County relegated

Writer: Andrew ZarbAndrew Zarb

Round-up:

In the match which would have decided which team will be automatically promoted to League 1 and who would have to navigate the play-offs, it was Milton Keynes Dons who won out thanks to a 2nd-minute goal which meant they finished in third ahead of Mansfield Town who will be taking part in the end-of-season play-offs. Newport County, despite being held to a draw by Morecambe were the last team to confirm their place in the promotion play-offs, since Exeter City were also held to a goalless draw by Forest Green Rovers who too will be in the promotion play-offs. Newport County earning a draw on the final day meant that victories for Colchester United and Stevenage against champions Lincoln City and Cheltenham Town respectively were not enough to move into the play-offs. The one other team who still stood a theoretical chance of making the play-offs, Carlisle United, were held to a goalless draw by already-relegated Yeovil Town.

Down in the relegation battle, Notts County, who needed a win to stand any chance of survival, had their relegation to the National League confirmed after they suffered a 3-1 defeat away to Swindon Town despite taking the lead. This result meant that Macclesfield Town's draw against Cambridge United was irrelevant as Macclesfield would have been safe even if they lost. Notts County and Yeovil Town will be replaced in League 2 by National League champions Leyton Orient and the winners of the National League play-offs (with currently AFC Fylde, Salford City and Eastleigh still in the running). In other games that took place today, Northampton Town signed off their season with an impressive 5-2 win over Oldham Athletic, whilst Grimsby Town also ended their season with a victory over Crewe Alexandra. Crawley Town, meanwhile, ended their season with a win over Tranmere Rovers, who will also be competing in the play-offs. Finally, Bury and Port Vale shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw. Final day results: Bury 1 Port Vale 1
