Premier League round-up: Man City open up lead at top to 4 points, Tottenham lose again

Round-up:

In today's early kick-off, Brighton & Hove Albion claimed bragging rights after beating Crystal Palace 2-1 in an age-old rivalry. Glenn Murray, considered a 'prodigal son' on these parts after he had initially left Brighton & Hove Albion to join Crystal Palace before eventually returning to Brighton, gave Brighton the lead in the 19th minute with a very good finish after an error by Crystal Palace defender James Tomkins. Crystal Palace were awarded a penalty in the 49th minute after Davy Propper fouled Andros Townsend in the penalty area, and Luka Milivojevic coolly converted the resulting spot kick. Anthony Knockaert, who arguably should have been sent off in the first minute after a wild challenge on Luka Milivojevic (for which he was booked), scored with a wonderful shot in the top corner to win the game for Brighton in the 74th minute.

Tottenham Hotspur suffered a third defeat in their last 4 League games, after Southampton came from behind to win 2-1, boosting their survival prospects down at the bottom. Harry Kane gave Tottenham the lead in the 26th minute, before Yan Valery equalised for the Saints in the 76th minute after some rather poor defending from Tottenham's Danny Rose, before James Ward-Prowse scored the winner with a wonderful free kick from 25 yards out. It was crucial that Southampton won, as they were able to maintain their 2-point advantage over third bottom Cardiff City, who beat West Ham United 2-0 thanks to goals from Junior Hoilett and Victor Camarasa. Huddersfield Town's survival prospects just get bleaker and bleaker by the week, as they are now 16 points adrift of safety after suffering a 2-0 defeat at home to AFC Bournemouth thanks to goals from Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser. Fulham's survival prospects also are not looking any better after a second consecutive defeat for new manager Scott Parker, whose side lost 3-1 to Leicester City, making it Rodgers' first home win as Leicester City manager thanks to 2 late goals from Jamie Vardy after Floyd Ayite had equalised for Fulham following Youri Tielemans' opener for the Foxes. Newcastle United produced an astonishing comeback to beat Everton 3-2, thanks to a goal from Salomon Rondon and 2 from Ayoze Perez after Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison had given Everton a 2-goal lead.

In the evening kick-off, Manchester City extended their advantage at the top of the League to four points before Liverpool play tomorrow after beating Watford 3-1 thanks to a Raheem Sterling hat-trick, although not without controversy as probably Sterling's first goal should have not been given due to offside. Gerard Deulofeu scored a consolation goal for Watford.
