Valtteri Bottas claimed his second pole position of the season in Austria, posting a 1:04.251. Sebastian Vettel qualified on the front row in second place, whilst Lewis Hamilton qualified in third but will start from 8th on the grid as he has to serve a 5-place grid penalty for a gearbox change. With Hamilton serving his 5-place grid penalty, Kimi Raikkonen will start in third place with the two Red Bull drivers of Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen following in fourth and fifth place respectively.
On a disappointing note, Lance Stroll, who finished on the podium last time out in Baku, failed to get out of Q1 as well as his Williams team-mate Felipe Massa, with the two Saubers of Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein qualifying 19th and 20th respectively.
