Hamilton on pole in Canada

Writer: Andrew ZarbAndrew Zarb

Lewis Hamilton has qualified on pole position in Montreal for the sixth time in his career, matching Michael Schumacher in the process, whilst equalling Ayrton Senna for number of pole positions with 65, with a 1:11.459. Sebastian Vettel qualified on the front row for Ferrari.

In Q1, it was Stoffel Vandoorne, Lance Stroll, Kevin Magnussen, Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein who were eliminated. Wehrlein himself crashed at the end of Q1 on the entry into turn 1 after spinning and he hit the barriers, and thus no driver could improve on his time.

Afterwards, in Q2, it was Daniil Kvyat, Fernando Alonso, Carlos Sainz, Romain Grosjean and Jolyon Palmer who were eliminated. Daniil Kvyat hit the barriers towards the end of Q2 at turn 7, and it completely damaged his right rear tyre.

Then, the crucial part - the shootout for pole, Q3 came. On the first runs, Hamilton was fastest of anybody, setting a dynamite lap of 1:11.791. Bottas set the second fastest time, with Raikkonen and Vettel following in third and fourth respectively. Vettel lost time after locking up on the hairpin leading to the first main straight. Then Vettel set an impressive lap, just 4 thousandths slower than Hamilton's time, and lost a decent amount of time which most certainly denied him fastest lap at the time. Then, on the final run, Hamilton improved again setting a 1:11.459. Bottas failed to improve on his time, and qualified third, with Raikkonen improving but not managing enough to outqualify Bottas. Sebastian Vettel was the last to qualify, but could not grab pole position from Hamilton, and set a time 3.3 tenths slower than Hamilton. Daniel Ricciardo qualified sixth for Red Bull, with the rest of the top 10 being (in respective order starting from seventh): Massa, Perez, Ocon and Hulkenberg. After qualifying, the top 3 drivers were interviewed at turn 2, and Hamilton was presented Ayrton Senna's helmet from the 1987 season in a fitting moment to mark the fact that Hamilton has now equalled Ayrton Senna for number of pole positions (65).
